March AMA Question 1: How do I stop feeling so overwhelmed all the time?

Feeling constantly overwhelmed as a mom? In this post, I break down why daily overwhelm happens and how better systems (not more willpower) can create more predictable days, fewer emotional spikes, and less resentment.

    Hi Mummis,

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “Why am I always overwhelmed?” you are not alone. This is a question I get a lot.

Many overwhelmed moms are too close to the systems creating their exhaustion to see what’s actually happening.

Overwhelm makes sense. Motherhood carries a lot. The nonstop decisions. The constant tending to everyone else’s needs before your own. The invisible to-do list running in your head before your feet even hit the floor.

Tension builds slowly… and then suddenly feels like too much.

As a single mom working multiple jobs, raising two teens, managing a home, nurturing relationships, and training consistently, learning how to navigate overwhelm and build better systems is non-negotiable for me.

When I zoom out, there are usually a few predictable patterns underneath the times of deep overwhelm. Here are the four I see most often in myself and in the moms I work with:

    • I’ve been putting everyone else’s needs above my own.

    • I haven’t been doing the things that refill my energy.

    • My sleep, nutrition, or health has slipped.

    • There’s a relational issue I’m avoiding or unsure how to address.

Before we go further, it’s important to separate daily overwhelm from burnout. This post is about the day-to-day overwhelm many moms feel. (Burnout was another AMA question. We’ll cover that soon.)

    Why Moms Feel Overwhelmed

From the moment we open our eyes, the mental checklist starts running.

Breakfast. Lunches. Schedules. Work tasks. Appointments. Emotional demands. Household management.

If our energy is a limited resource (and it is!) then every decision and task is a withdrawal.

Most moms discover they’re overwhelmed because they’re running a household on 5 hours of sleep and caffeine. They’re under-resourced.

Of course that feels heavy. You can’t keep withdrawing from something that has no balance.

    Overwhelm isn’t a personal failure.

It’s a systems issue. And systems can be changed.

When you change your systems, you create:

    • More predictable days

    • Fewer emotional spikes

    • Less reactive parenting

    • Clearer decision-making

    • Less resentment

Inside Wellness 101, we build this entire system step-by-step so your days stop running you.

I’ll give you a simple starting point here.

    1. Do an Energy Audit

Before you change anything, you need awareness.

Track the basics for a few days:
    eating, hydration, sleep, movement, stressors.

I know it sounds like “one more thing,” but you can’t fix what you can’t see. Without this step, it’s like trying to pump water out of a sinking boat without finding the leak.

Inside Wellness 101, we walk through exactly how to do this in a way that’s simple and sustainable and we provide a three-day tracker. You can begin with this on your own.

    2. Reflect

Once you have data, look at patterns.

    What’s draining you?
    What’s missing?
Where are you operating on autopilot?

Even small insights can shift everything.

Most overwhelmed moms aren’t drowning because they have too much to do.

They’re drowning because their days don’t match what actually matters to them.

Inside the course, we guide you through structured reflection questions. If you’re trying this on your own, make sure you also notice what’s going well. Areas that feel steady or supportive are useful information too.

    3. Plan. Align Your Days With Your Values

We call this your destination summary.

This is where you define the life you’re building. Identify the anchors you want in your daily rhythm.

If you want to be the team mom this season, own that choice.
If you want more quiet mornings, put them in the plan.
If you want to train consistently, block it in.

Then compare that vision to your current calendar.

When your days align with your values, you stop resenting your responsibilities.

That shift alone reduces overwhelm dramatically.

    4. Protect Your Energy by Saying No

You cannot do everything at once without paying for it with your peace.

If you’re the soccer mom this season, maybe you can’t also host a weekly book club.

    And that’s okay.

    It’s okay to disappoint people.
    It’s okay to choose yourself.
Other adults can manage their own feelings.

Your energy is not an unlimited resource.

    5. Address the Sneaky Leaks

    Sometimes overwhelm isn’t about tasks.

    It’s about unresolved tension.

    The conversation you’re avoiding.
    The boundary you haven’t set.
    The resentment you haven’t admitted.

Unresolved tension keeps your nervous system slightly activated all day long. That baseline stress makes everything feel heavier than it is.

When you resolve the issue, you don’t just solve the problem.

    You get your energy back.

    6. Support Your Body’s Basics

    Are you sleeping enough?
    Eating real meals?
Drinking water that isn’t coffee? (I struggle with this one!)

These aren’t luxuries. They are foundational. They are the deposits to support the withdrawals.

When your body is supported, your mind steadies.
When your mind steadies, your reactions soften.
When your reactions soften, your days feel more predictable.

    Overwhelm decreases.

    A Final Word

    Overwhelm doesn’t mean you’re failing.

It means you’re carrying a lot without a stabilizing structure.

If you’re tired of living in reactive mode and want days that feel stable and intentional, Wellness 101 walks you through building systems tailored to your real life. So your days feel balanced, sustainable, and steady.

If you’d like structured support, you can learn more below.

You don’t need to overhaul your entire life.

    You just need better systems.

Because you deserve days that feel steady, grounded, and clear.

    Sending you supportive vibes ✨
