How To Keep Training Even When You Really Don't Want to
Hi Mummis,
This week I want to talk about something many of us struggle with. How to keep training even when you really don't want to.
You already do so many hard things. You carry responsibility. You create stability. You make life better for the people around you.
It makes sense that you feel depleted. Anyone would.
When time and energy are limited, exercise can feel optional. Or like just one more thing.
But here are two perspectives that can change how you experience movement.
First, movement is something your body gives you
You get to move your body. It is a gift.
That may sound obvious, but it is easy to forget. The ability to walk, stretch, lift, or breathe deeply through movement is not guaranteed. It depends on health, mobility, time, and opportunity.
Most of us have had moments where we thought, “I don’t feel like going for a walk.”
Many of us have also had moments where we thought, “I wish I could go for a walk.”
So what if you intentionally experienced exercise differently?
During a walk, a stretch, or a strength session, you might pause to notice the power your muscles generate as they work together. You might feel the relief as tension leaves your neck and shoulders. You might enjoy the sensation of a muscle lengthening or warming.
When you pause to notice these sensations, movement feels good.
And when movement feels good, showing up stops feeling like discipline and starts feeling like care.
Second, training is an investment that pays you back
Training does not just change how your body looks. It changes how your days feel.
Regular movement improves energy. Blood flow improves. Muscles support joints. Blood sugar regulation improves. Sleep quality improves.
Over time, these changes compound.
This is why training makes life feel more manageable. You are preparing your body to support you, rather than asking it to catch up once you are already exhausted.
Each time you train, you make a small deposit into your future self.
Those deposits show up as:
clearer thinking
more emotional balance
greater physical capacity
more resilience when life feels heavy
And more.
You respect yourself by showing up for yourself. You build a foundation that quietly pays dividends.
This Is The Reframe
You are not forcing yourself to exercise.
You are allowing your body to do what it is capable of doing.
You are noticing and appreciating how movement feels.
And you are investing in the version of yourself who has more energy, patience, and steadiness.
A Few Simple Practices That Help
Lower the barrier to entry. Short workouts count.
Decide in advance when you will train. Planning removes daily negotiation. You can adjust type or intensity based on energy, but the plan keeps you consistent.
Choose routines that leave you feeling better afterward. If you dislike a workout, choose something else. You are not proving anything. You are moving to honor yourself.
Let training support your life, not compete with it.
You already show up for the people you love even when you are tired. Make sure that includes you. 💜
